Terms
The rules for using The Collector, written to match how the service actually works.

Draft for legal review
This draft describes what The Collector does today in plain language. It hasn’t been reviewed by a lawyer yet, and the wording may change before it takes effect. Open questions for review:
- The contracting entity, its address, governing law and venue.
- Minimum age and whether younger collectors need a parent’s consent.
- Refunds for unused time on paid plans, and how much notice price changes need.
- The final wording of the disclaimers and limitation of liability.
- Seller terms for shops (fees, invoicing, taxes, disputes), currently summarized here.
Using The Collector
The Collector helps you catalog comic books, identify editions, track runs and values, and share a showcase if you want to. Shops can list books and receive hold requests. By creating an account or using the service you agree to these terms and to our privacy practices.
Your account
- An account is for one person. Keep access to your email (it’s how you sign in) and your devices secure.
- You’re responsible for what happens under your account. If you think someone else signed in, sign out of other devices in Settings → Devices.
- We may suspend an account that breaks these terms or puts other collectors or the service at risk.
Your collection and content
What you record is yours. You keep every right to your collection data, notes and photos. You give us permission to store, process and display them so the service works for you, including showing on your public profile only what you chose to make public there.
No lock-in. You can export your full collection as CSV or JSON at any time, on every plan, and import it again.
Only upload photos and text you have the right to use, and don’t post other people’s personal information on a public profile.
The catalog and contributions
The shared catalog is built on data from Metron and the Grand Comics Database under the CC BY-SA 4.0 license; see data sources and credits.
When you add a comic the catalog doesn’t have yet or send a correction, you license that contribution under CC BY-SA 4.0 too, so the catalog stays open. Moderators may edit, merge or decline contributions. Your copies and everything you record about them are not part of the catalog.
Cover images are © their publishers and creators and are shown to identify each issue. They aren’t covered by the catalog license.
Values and AI
Values are estimates built from anonymized prices that collectors record, plus clearly labeled rules of thumb. Each shows the evidence behind it. They aren’t appraisals, offers to buy, or financial or investment advice; check recent sales before you buy, sell or insure a book.
AI features (reading covers and the assistant) can be wrong. The assistant proposes changes to your collection and you approve them; review a match before relying on it.
Plans and billing
- Cataloging and barcode scanning are free and unlimited on every plan. Paid plans add AI volume, photo storage and tools, as described on the pricing page.
- Paid plans are billed in advance by Stripe, monthly or yearly, and renew until you cancel. You can change plans, update your card or cancel from your billing settings; paid features continue until the end of the period you paid for.
- AI allowances are monthly and reset on the 1st (UTC). When an allowance runs out, AI features pause until it resets; everything else keeps working.
- Deleting your account cancels a paid plan immediately.
Stores and holds
Shops publish their own listings and set their own prices. A hold is a request for a shop to set a book aside; the shop decides whether to accept it, and payment happens between you and the shop, in person or through the shop’s own invoice. The Collector isn’t a party to that sale, doesn’t handle the money, and doesn’t guarantee a listing’s accuracy.
Shops pay The Collector a seller fee when they complete a hold as a sale, at the rate in effect when the sale is completed (the rate on the pricing page, unless a different rate was agreed with the shop), billed to the shop’s payment method. Shops are responsible for their listings, taxes and how they treat collectors’ information.
Fair use of the service
Please don’t:
- break the law, infringe someone’s rights, or impersonate another person or shop;
- post abusive or misleading content, or misrepresent books you list or offer;
- access other people’s data, probe or disrupt the service, or get around plan limits;
- scrape or bulk-download the service in ways that strain it; the catalog data itself is available under its license.
Ending your account
You can delete your account at any time in Settings → Account. You’ll see what is deleted and what stays before you confirm. We may close accounts that seriously or repeatedly break these terms, and we’ll give you the chance to export your data when we can.
Disclaimers and liability
We work to keep The Collector accurate and available, but it’s provided as is: catalog data, values and AI results can contain mistakes, and the service can be interrupted. To the extent the law allows, we aren’t liable for indirect losses or for decisions you make based on the service. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have that can’t be limited by law.
Changes to these terms
If we change these terms in a way that matters, we’ll update this page and its date and tell you in the app before the change takes effect. If you don’t agree with a change, you can export your data and delete your account.
